What is an Idea Pin? And how to use them as a business!

Idea Pins can be thought of as Pinterest Stories (just like Instagram's but a little different!)

May 2021 saw the launch of a new feature on Pinterest called an Idea Pin (was originally called a Story Pin), which is a video-first feature aimed at creators who want to tell their story using video, music, creative editing tools etc. Think of an Idea Pin as a mix of TikTok and Instagram Stories. Like Instagram and TikTok, they are aimed at creators, but business owners can definitely and should join in on the fun too!

SO WHAT IS THE KEY INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CREATING AN IDEA PIN?

  • Video Pins can be up to 60 seconds per page.

  • You can have up to a total of 20 pages per Idea Pin.

  • You can edit your Idea Pin, like you would an Instagram story or you can upload already created content and share it on the platform (Tip: Instagram reels are perfect!)

  • Idea Pins are saved at the top of your profile and do not disappear after 24hours (think of Instagram Highlights as a comparison).

  • You can include information on a 'details page' where the viewer can read more information etc, your Idea Pin also needs a title.

  • Topic tags help your content to be found by users/distributed (each Idea Pin can have up to 10 topic tags).

  • Pinterest users, can save Idea Pins like any other Pin on the platform.

HOW TO USE AN IDEA PIN AS A BUSINESS?

Some of the ways you can use them for your business are:

  • Step-by-step guides

  • Short videos with text overlays

  • Showcase collections of products

  • Explain one of your services or products

  • Tell a story about your brand or business

  • Answer customer questions

Remember to utilise your keywords and catchy pin titles on Idea Pins also to give them the best chance of being spread far and wide!
